Citrine is November's birthstones and anniversary gemstone for the 17th year of marriage. It is a popular less expensive alternative to the much more expensive yellow sapphire or yellow diamond. Citrine is yellow quartz with a hardness of 7 and can be easily scratched. Citrine often permanently changes color if left in the sunlight for several hours. Most citrine on the market is heat treated amethyst. Citrine is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Spain, USA (California, Colorado, Georgia, and Nevada) and the former USSR.
