Saa (mulberry) paper is made from the bark of the mulberry tree. Once a year, the bark is stripped and collected. The tree is cut down to the roots and will re-grow to a productive state in about one year. The bark is soaked in water for about one week then boiled for 12 hours to further break down the fibers. The softened bark is bleached using an oxygen water mix, which is a little more expensive than chlorine but does not have a detrimental effect on the environment. The white pulp is then placed in bamboo frames containing a silk gauze screen. These frames are lowered into tanks of water. The pulp is then spread out evenly in the water to make a consistent mix. Flowers are then added to create a floral pattern. The frames are then lifted slowly out of the water trapping an even layer of the pulp onto the silk gauze. The frames are put out to dry in the sun and handmade saa (mulberry) paper is the final product.
